In Part I, we considered the current call to change the name of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). While today’s thrust appears to be generationally-driven (though not exclusively so), it would be a mistake to assume the age of the name-change advocate plays a primary factor historically. To the contrary, neither age nor even the theological perspective (that is, whether conservative, moderate, or liberal) stood out as the primary motive for dropping “southern” from the official name of the Southern Baptist Convention. Therefore, as a side-note I may pick up... Read more →

I am not inclined to sign manifestos or petitions. But I signed The West Georgia Redneck Declaration. Indeed I am among the original signatories to that statement, which will be released to the public at the National Press Club tonight. Why? I explain below... There are several reasons, but they all come down to this — I believe West Georgia rednecks are facing an inevitable and culture-determining decision on issues centrally identified in this statement. I also believe that rednecks will experience a significant loss of freedom to carry shotguns... Read more →

About a year or so ago, Fox News ran a story on a therapeutic phenomenon known as Destruction Therapy (//link). The therapeutic idea is both primitive and simple: "fix" yourself by freely destroying something else (//link). Of interest to me is the possible parallel between the proposed method Destruction Therapy therapists advocate for securing psychological health and some Southern Baptist leaders who advocate similar measures to "fix" the Southern Baptist Convention. Below is a flick which captures perfectly what some seem to want for the Southern Baptist Convention. With that,... Read more →

Since busting myths now possesses, as its capable, indisputable apologetic, the scholarly handling of "water-cooler talk" as definitive evidence for justifying that "myths" people believe exist, the study of history, philosophy, law and especially theology will never remain quite the same (//link). Since June of this year, some have raised the question since NAMB is a failed/failing institution of the Southern Baptist Convention, it's time for us to prepare its bed, say nightynight, and tuck it snugly and securely away. Even farther back, the shot fired from Wake Forest heard round the world awakened all sleeping Baptists with this single bullet: "Do we need all the boards and agencies we currently have or could there be some healthy and wise mergers?" (//link). We now have the official word... NAMB... Down ya go!... Read more →

Who said there's no jobs out there? Keep up the good work, Mr. Obama. In and around Atlanta we're doing just peachy. For starters, just consider the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. Presently there are at least four cool jobs available (//link). I wonder who will end up with the positions. Let's do some guessing. How about?... Wade Burleson for President of NAMB. He'd do a good job. And, he could kick up some dust in people's faces for sure! With the temperatures nicely leveled off concerning some Southern Baptists' odd infatuation with the ministry methodology of Seattle pastor, Mark Driscoll, it may just be Driscoll has been scientifically vindicated pertaining to what some continue to dub potty-mouth preaching.** Top of Form Bottom of Form A recent study released in the August, 2009 edition of NeuroReport, appears to affirm "swearing" is good for us. According to the report, the findings show cussin' "increased pain tolerance" on the one hand, while it "decreased perceived pain compared with not swearing" on the... Read more →

My son sent me a link to this site and said I might enjoy tracking it. Being a SBpk he well recalls our annual conventions where attending pudgy preacher physiques out number attending puny preacher physiques, at minimum, 10 to 1. This picture may clue us in to part of the reason why. If you like, visit the site, This is why you're fat, and look at its entire photo album (be prepared to gag at some of the selections). When my Hun & I travel to our homeplace back in beautiful Tennessee, we travel backroads that wind us through the Sweet Home state. About dead center between Anniston and Huntsville, there sits the tiny little town known as Boaz. Not much there; just a place to travel through, looking for junk and enjoying the ride. A pass-time Boazians must surely enjoy is wrestling. Virtually every time we travel through, the newest billboard boasts of the upcoming Saturday Night event. Seems like our watchdog from Enid is guarding the Southern Baptist Convention from the evil that's creeping in. Last week he warned us that while the SBC was not a cult, it acted like one. If your journey with God is similar to mine, sometimes we descend into a murky hole, glibly asking God to make His will and His will alone known in our life, a sorta "I-just-want-your-will-to-be-done" kind of prayer. Many times our Lord's response is to bite, mashing down hard in a way we faintly expected. We wrongly assumed God's Word is always gentle...soothing...relaxing. It is that alright, but not always. Sometimes the Bible is more of a beast. When I saw the following clip, I got a belly-busting laugh. Later, I... Read more →

There is little doubt in my mind that there exists presently, in the SBC, a deliberate push to dilute some of the historic distinctives that have made us Baptist. From the recent TBN Baptist-Charismatic lineup poised to pray all Southern Baptists receive the gift of tongues...to the quasi-evangelicalism promoted by the Enid-Outpost coalition...to the moderationists who insist having a few beers with the boys is not so bad, we are being hit from almost every conceivable angle >>> A real danger many of us face--that is, those of us who... SCBTomorrow has just learned that the Outpost-Enid (Burleson, Cole, Kaufman) coalition, whose apparent goal is to dismantle the historic Trustee system of accountability for the Southern Baptist Convention, has employed famed Psychic, Colin Fry as their newest consultant. I must admit I've experienced withdrawal seizures since I last posted on Wade Bulreson's blog. Most know I received a ban there. And just when I was beginning to bond with him too. He did not take kindly to my pinching him really hard for his obvious inappropriate and, in my view, morally disgusting exploitation of the mentally challenged community.
