The Great Commission Resurgence (GCR) document has gathered more than 3,000 signatories, many of which are current or former Southern Baptist Convention leaders. Not all, however, were quick to sign their name on the dotted line.
Drs. Paige Patterson and Jerry Vines, both of whom are past presidents of the Southern Baptist Convention, as well as key prophetic voices of the Conservative Resurgence, recently signed their names to the GCR. Yet their signatures uniquely bear a brand not found on other signatories—“with caveats.”
The uninformed might immediately but crassly conclude neither man embraces a Great Commission Resurgence. A conclusion like this would surely seal one’s fate as dunce of the decade, however. Drs. Vines and Patterson may be not only the loudest, prophetic voice for global evangelism today, but also among the most consistent practitioners of personal evangelism today.
Even so, Dr. Vines speaks his heart in an interview with Dr. Gerald Harris, senior editor of The Christian Index, concerning his support of the GCR, his love and appreciation for both Drs. Johnny Hunt and Danny Akin in Baptist life and Kingdom work—a support and appreciation Dr. Patterson also holds, we’re fully confident—and his reasoning for signing “with caveats.”
The interview is online at Baptist Press (//link). Please do not miss the opportunity to hear a Southern Baptist statesman and prophet speak his heart concerning Southern Baptists.
In addition, Dr. Vines expounds further on his signature “with caveats” on his blog.
With that, I am…
Peter
