I just completed my first reading of Putting Amazing Back into Grace: Embracing the Heart of the Gospel by Michael Horton. Dr. Horton is Associate Professor of Apologetics and Historical Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Escondido, Califfornia. Unfortunately, I am disappointed >>>
It received good reviews from many including James Packer, Don Bloesch and W. Robert Godfrey. Thus, I anticipated a great read and a lively challenge. However, nothing I have not read before appears in Professor Horton’s book. In fact, it has already been better said by, for example, R.C. Sproul in Chosen by God.
Since I am absolutely swamped until after September 7, I cannot give a full review of the book from my perspective. But there is one thing I do desire to mention and when I return home in about 2 and 1/2 weeks (yuck!!!), I plan to do a little research on this myself.
In the Appendix, Dr. Horton attempts to assemble the Early Church Father’s views on the classic five points of Calvinism. And, predictibly, I might add, the Fathers end up being staunch Calvinists themselves. Now understand: I consider myself neither a scholar or an historian. Yet, from my recollection of the Fathers, I do not at all remember them as Horton describes them.
Thus, I want to do a little detective work myself when I can come up for air. Frankly , I think the good Professor is playing with a stacked deck. But the proof will be in the research, will it not?
From the hottest Mississippi yet,
With that, I am...
