peter,

these were wonderful, wise words. i wish that the outpost crowd would read them and heed them.

This is just one man's opinion and one I disagree with. I think SBCOutpost is doing just fine. It never claimed to be scripture and I still remember Paige Patterson saying he did not promise Dr. Klouda anything and barely knows Ben Cole, both untrue. So we will see if this is true or not as well.

Dear Debbie,

Your comment strikes at the heart as to precisely why Dr. Merithew's response is so timely. Unfortunately, rather than hear his exposition of Scripture, exhortation to employ godly principles in conflict and call for everyone--both pro and con on a particular point of disagreement--to be humble because everyone are sinners alike, you simply dismiss his thoughtful reflection with a dull but glaring "This is just one man's opinion and one I disagree with." Why would you insist on Dr. Merithew's post be so readily applicable to you, my Enid sister?

I must remind you that, unlike our mutual brother Wade, who feels the need to wipe clean the fingerprints of incriminating dialog, your comments remain here for others to see in all their enlightened nakedness.

As for the judgment itself you offer here--"This is just one man's opinion..."--you reveal exactly my point I've made all along:

Bottom line: Dr. Merithew, at least we know, exists in time and space. He possesses a physical address, a pastoral position in a real church in south Alabama. He actually did get his PhD from SBTS. Check the records. If he did not, expose us, my sister, for the frauds we are.

But as for this 'anonymous professor' we know not from whence he/she commeth. Indeed, we know not if he/she exists. Ergo, gossip.

Grace, Debbie. With that, I am...

Peter,

I am glad that you were able to post this response! Having served under Shawn Merithew at a church in Louisville, KY, I can vouch for him.

He does indeed exist.

(At least, in my opinion, he exists.)

Joe Stewart

Thanks Peter for doing a good deed for a fellow brother.

peter lumpkins

Double Joes,

Thanks to both of you for your encouragement. With that, I am...

Peter: You have misread me completely. I in no way shape or form believe what Dr. Merithew has said is for me personally or collectively for that matter. I am referring to the SBCOutpost, which I believe I said in my post.

Debbie Kaufman

But Boyd Luter knows where this anonymous professor comes from and that is personally more than good enough for me. Why shoot the messenger Peter? I believe it's because you and others don't like the message. If I were in your shoes with your view I doubt I would like it either.

I don't know any of the writers on this blog or the SBCOutpost personally, and I have nothing against any of them. I will assume they are all Christian people who believe they are right. That is not the issue. The issue is hearsay. Anonymous, unsubstantiated accusations, no matter who starts it or spreads it, is hearsay. It is not compelling evidence. Just saying it is from a reliable source close to the situation is not good enough. Maybe it's true. Maybe it's not. There is no way to verify the information. Just because people honestly believe it is true and stake their reputations on it doesn't make it true. They may be sincere, but wrong. Without real proof, there is no reason for me to take one person's word over another. I appreciate Dr. Merithew's comments.

Debbie Kaufman

Steve: Your hutzpah is truly amazing. So is your disdain. That would remind me of a few tales you have spread around...but of course this wouldn't apply to you personally would it.

Mary

Hey Pastor Grose! Have you ever dealt with anyone in a cult? Completely incapable of having a rational conversation.

Steve

Definitely Mary, all you can do is show them how silly they look... of course they wont ever thank you for it.
:) thanks
Steve

peter

Debbie,

Oh my, sister. It was I who believed Dr. Merithew's post obviously applied to you, not my understanding that you believed it to be so. I may be silly, sometimes, Debbie, but not that silly. I think it would do Enid & Outpost's position good if you'd read well the comments before engagement.

By the way, thanks! Your full throttle acceptance of anonymous gossip over open, verifiable testimony stands as the clearest marker to date between the views of Enid & Outpost on the one hand, and reasonable Southern Baptists on the other. Once again, thank you, my sister. Your contribution is appreciated.

With that, I am...

Well Peter, we would again disagree, however you, Steve, Mary not looking inside of yourselves does not surprise me in the least.

Mary: I pray that if you are Southern Baptist this does not reflect the attitude of your entire church and if you are not well God is good. It's the kind of venom displayed here that I would like to see ousted out of the Southern Baptist people. Until it is God will never be glorified and there will never be hope for reform. But rest assured I am a fighter. Just not a dirty one.

peter

Debbie,

If I did not know better, I'd think you're attempting to push me to ban you here. It seems your continued non-engagement with the issues and persistent focus on personalities continues to accelerate.

Actually, I have allowed you much more liberty than others to whom I've sent a personal email cautioning them to tone it down. Know, however, I am content, unless you become vulgar, to allow your comments to stay--at least for now.

There is, for me, a razor's edge I must carefully observe and over which I must not cross, given my desire newer readers feel a sense of comfort in participating here.

Please keep that in mind. With that, I am...

Peter
